3 Skypephone

I decided to get myself a 3 Skypephone last week - The website is here

It’s a great bit of kit, the Skype client acts pretty much the same as the windows client and with some tinkering on Saturday it now gives me internet access from my laptop using bluetooth at 3G speeds [getting about 800kb/s if you’re interested!].

Pros - Very easy to set up, just give it your Skype name and password. Easy to add Skype contacts, very good at getting a decent signal and holding on to it. Menus are clearly laid out. It comes with a 256MB card which is plenty for me for the odd pic or MP3.

Cons - The vibrate is really pathetic and the socket which is used for charging and connecting USB to has the flimsiest cover I’ve seen, I’d be surprised if it lasts the month. I really can’t think of anything else at the moment.

So if you want to add me to your Skype user list, I’m andytapg

    Hi,

Appreciate if you could let me know how I could access the net from my laptop using the phone as a modem. Thanks a lot.

Hi Sarah, I posted this on the Skype forums for someone who asked the same question. I realise every set up will be slightly different so if this doesn’t work send me an email and I’ll help as much as I can:

I have a USB dongle and am using Bluesoleil software on my laptop, I am assuming the MS bluetooth stack is similar:

    Enable bluetooth on the phone(!)
From your bluetooth software on the laptop do a discovery and it will find the phone, pair them.
In bluesoliel there is an option to search for services that the phone supports, do that.
One of them should be Dial Up Networking (DUN)
    Enable the service.
Go to Control Panel - Network Connections
In the Dial Up section you should see the WP-S1 phone listed.
right click on this and ‘Connect’
It will ask for a username and password, keep these blank
In the ‘dial’ field put *99#
I seem to recall a dial up speed setting somewhere, the default is 115200 which is fine, I have mine at 230400 which seems to work, any higher then this and it fails.

    Hope that helps!
